Description and usage: Made by steam distillation of Mentha leaves. It has a pale yellow color and a strong, fresh and somewhat bitter-sweet scent. Oil is good for the nervous system acting as a regulator and sedative: Menthol is well known as a cardiac tonic in pharmaceutical preparations. It is a good blood cleanser. It can be used in swollen gums, mouth wash or mouth ulcers, toothache. It is often used for flavoring toothpastes, mouthwashes and pharmaceuticals.
Blends well with: peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen, basil, bergamot, cedarwood, eucalyptus, lemon, lime, mandarin, pine, rosemary, marjoram, thyme.
Interesting facts: It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 10–60 cm (rarely to 100 cm) tall. The leaves are in opposite pairs, simple, 2–6.5 cm long and 1–2 cm broad, hairy, and with a coarsely serrated margin. The flowers are pale purple. It is native to the temperate regions of Europe and western and central Asia, east to the Himalaya and eastern Siberia, and North America.
