Description

Aleppo soap, one of the oldest known hard soaps, originates from the historic Syrian city of Aleppo. Handcrafted using time-honored techniques, this natural soap has been cherished for nearly 4,000 years for its unique skin-nourishing, healing, and hydrating properties. Aleppo soap is believed to be the inspiration for Marseille soap, brought to Europe by the Crusaders. It has been used for centuries in traditional Syrian hammams (baths) and was once a luxury item favored by royalty.

What Makes Aleppo Soap Special?

With its golden-brown surface, deep green interior, and distinct earthy scent, Aleppo soap stands apart from modern synthetic cleansers. It is crafted exclusively from olive oil, laurel oil, water, and sodium hydroxide, making it a purely natural skincare product.

  • Olive Oil – Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, it deeply hydrates the skin and provides a protective barrier against moisture loss.
  • Laurel Oil – Known for its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, laurel oil helps with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and rashes. The higher the laurel oil content, the stronger its therapeutic effects.
  • Water & Sodium Hydroxide – Essential components in traditional soap-making, allowing the oils to saponify and form a solid bar.

Note: While laurel oil is highly beneficial, it may cause mild irritation in some individuals with sensitive skin. If you are new to Aleppo soap, starting with a 5% laurel oil variant is recommended before trying higher concentrations.

How is Aleppo Soap Made?

The production of Aleppo soap remains unchanged for centuries, using a traditional hot-process method:

  1. Boiling: Olive oil, water, and sodium hydroxide are heated in large vats, allowing saponification to occur over several days.
  2. Adding Laurel Oil: Once the mixture reaches the right consistency, laurel oil is added for its healing and antiseptic properties.
  3. Pouring & Cooling: The thick, green soap mixture is poured onto a flat surface in a drying chamber.
  4. Cutting & Stamping: After solidifying, the soap is hand-cut into cubes and stamped with the manufacturer's seal.
  5. Aging Process: The soap is left to dry for 6 to 9 months in an open-air environment. During this time, the outer layer oxidizes, giving the soap its characteristic golden hue, while the inside retains its deep green color.

How to Use Aleppo Soap?

Aleppo soap is a versatile, all-natural cleanser suitable for everyday use:

  • Face & Body Wash – Gently cleanses without stripping natural oils, making it ideal for sensitive skin.
  • Shampoo Alternative – Helps soothe scalp conditions like dandruff and itching (best used with a mildly acidic conditioner to balance pH).
  • Shaving Soap – Its rich, creamy lather makes shaving smoother and reduces irritation.
  • Intimate Hygiene – Free from artificial fragrances and harsh chemicals, it is safe for delicate skin.

Storage Tips

To prolong the life of your Aleppo soap, store it in a dry, well-ventilated place. If exposed to moisture for too long, the surface may develop a soft gel-like layer.
